Getting the Most from Festival Food Photography
Mole is one of the hardest dishes to photograph well, and knowing why helps when you choose images for an article or feature. A good mole is deep brown, red or almost black, glossy and thick, and under harsh overhead light it can look flat or muddy. The most useful festival images tend to show texture and context: sesame seeds scattered over a dark sauce, the sheen on a ladle lifted from a clay pot, or a plate served with rice and warm tortillas. When you pick from the gallery, look for shots where the colour of the sauce reads clearly on screen and in print.
Choosing images that tell the story
A food festival is about people as much as plates. Consider pairing a close-up of a dish with a wider scene so readers understand the setting:
- Dish details that show the variety of moles, from poblano and negro to verde, rosa and almendrado.
- Preparation shots of grinding, toasting or stirring, which help explain how much work goes into a single batch.
- Stall and crowd scenes that convey the atmosphere of tasting your way through many kitchens in one visit.
If your piece focuses on particular cooks or stalls, the vendors page is a helpful reference for checking how each one is credited, so captions stay accurate.
Captions and context
Write captions that name the style of mole where you can, and avoid labelling every dark sauce simply as "chocolate sauce". Many moles contain little or no chocolate, and their character comes from dried chillies, nuts, seeds, spices and long cooking. A short, correct caption adds real value for readers unfamiliar with the dish. For background on ingredients and techniques, the recipes section offers context you can draw on.
Practical notes for editors
Images saved directly from a web gallery are usually compressed for fast loading and suit online articles and social posts best. For print, large-format layouts or covers, request high-resolution files by email well ahead of your deadline, and mention the intended use and dimensions so the right files can be found. Please do not crop out credits embedded in an image, alter colours in ways that misrepresent the food, or use photos in advertising without asking first. Further coverage material is collected on the press page.
