What to Expect on Your Volunteer Shift
Festival days move quickly, and a little preparation makes any shift easier and more enjoyable. Mexico City sits at well over 2,000 metres above sea level, so the sun is stronger than many visitors expect and you may tire faster than usual. Bring a refillable water bottle, a hat and sunscreen. Pack a light layer too, because mornings and evenings can turn cool and afternoon showers are common in the rainy season. Closed, comfortable shoes are a must for setup and breakdown crews, who spend hours on their feet carrying tables, tents and supplies.
Getting there and arriving on time
Traffic in the city can be unpredictable, especially on weekends near popular gathering spots. Public transport is often the most reliable way to reach the festival grounds. Plan your route the day before and aim to arrive a little early so there is time for check-in and a short briefing before the gates open. The festival map is worth studying in advance. Knowing where the vendor rows, rest areas and information points are will help you answer guest questions with confidence.
Working alongside vendors
Many of the cooks who bring mole to the festival have been perfecting family recipes for generations. Dishes range from deep, chocolate-tinged mole poblano to the dark, smoky mole negro of Oaxaca and lighter green and yellow moles built on herbs and fresh chiles. If you are assigned to vendor assistance, your job may include restocking napkins and serving ware, helping guide queues and passing messages to the organising team. Be respectful of each stall's workspace and follow the vendor's lead. You can read about participating cooks on the vendors page before your shift.
Tips for a good shift
- Learn a few basic Spanish phrases if you are not a fluent speaker. Many guests and vendors will appreciate the effort.
- Eat before you start, or plan your break around a tasting. Long stretches on an empty stomach are hard work.
- Keep your phone charged in case shift leads need to reach you.
- Ask questions whenever you are unsure. Experienced volunteers are usually happy to help newcomers.
Once your shift is over, take time to explore. Volunteering offers a rare behind-the-scenes view of how a food festival comes together, and afterwards you can enjoy it as a guest.
